meniscectomy
Definition
surgical removal of all or part of a meniscus, typically performed to treat meniscal tears or degenerative conditions in the knee joint
Clinical context
A 28-year-old athlete presents with severe knee pain and locking sensation after a sports injury. MRI reveals a torn meniscus with mechanical symptoms. Arthroscopic surgery is performed to remove the damaged meniscal tissue. Post-operatively, the patient's knee function improves significantly with resolution of mechanical symptoms.
Mnemonic
Meniscus = Meni (men) + sect (cut) = surgical cutting/removal of the meniscus
