Definition

A pathological condition characterized by the formation of a blood clot within the mesenteric vessels, which supply blood to the intestines

Clinical context

A 65-year-old man presents to the emergency department with sudden onset severe abdominal pain and vomiting. He has a history of atrial fibrillation and is on warfarin therapy. On examination, he appears pale and diaphoretic with marked abdominal tenderness. CT angiography reveals thrombosis of the superior mesenteric artery. This condition requires immediate surgical intervention to prevent bowel infarction and sepsis.
