metabolic alkalosis
Definition
A pathological condition characterized by an excess of alkaline substances in the body, typically resulting from a loss of acidic materials or an increase in alkaline intake, leading to an elevated blood pH level
Clinical context
A 55-year-old woman presents to the emergency department after prolonged vomiting for 3 days. She appears dehydrated with muscle weakness and tetany. Laboratory studies show elevated blood pH and bicarbonate levels. The patient's condition is most likely due to loss of gastric acid from persistent vomiting.
