mitral regurgitation
Definition
backflow of blood through the mitral valve during ventricular systole
Clinical context
A 62-year-old patient with a history of rheumatic heart disease presents with shortness of breath and fatigue. On examination, a holosystolic murmur is heard best at the apex, radiating to the left axilla. The patient also has signs of pulmonary congestion including bilateral crackles on lung exam. Echocardiography confirms mitral regurgitation with left atrial enlargement.
