Definition

A chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by fibrosis (scarring) of the bone marrow, leading to impaired blood cell production

Clinical context

A 65-year-old man presents with fatigue, weight loss, and splenomegaly. Laboratory studies show pancytopenia with teardrop cells on peripheral smear and elevated LDH. Bone marrow biopsy reveals extensive fibrosis with hypercellularity. The diagnosis is myelofibrosis.
