Definition
A neural tube defect characterized by the protrusion of the spinal cord and meninges through a defect in the vertebral column
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents for prenatal care at 20 weeks gestation. Ultrasound reveals a large posterior spinal defect with visible spinal cord and meninges protruding through the vertebral column. The fetus is diagnosed with myelomeningocele, a type of spina bifida. The patient is counseled about the associated complications including hydrocephalus and lower extremity paralysis.
