Definition
A group of disorders characterized by the excessive production of blood cells in the bone marrow
Clinical context
A 68-year-old man presents to the emergency department with fatigue, weakness, and splenomegaly. His complete blood count shows elevated hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet count. Physical examination reveals petechiae and easy bruising. Laboratory studies confirm increased myeloid precursors in the bone marrow with normal or increased numbers of megakaryocytes.
