Definition
A disease characterized by the excessive production of blood cells in the bone marrow
Clinical context
A 52-year-old man presents to the emergency department with fatigue, weakness, and easy bruising. Physical examination reveals splenomegaly and petechiae on his lower extremities. Laboratory studies show elevated hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelet count with normal bone marrow aspiration. The patient is diagnosed with polycythemia vera, a subset of myeloproliferative neoplasms.
