Definition
inflammation of the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose
Clinical context
A 3-year-old child presents with fever, nasal congestion, and sore throat that has persisted for 5 days. On examination, the pharynx appears red and swollen with yellow exudate. The child has difficulty swallowing and complains of ear pain. The physician diagnoses nasopharyngitis and prescribes supportive care with acetaminophen and increased fluids.
