Definition

A malignant tumor of the kidney derived from immature kidney cells, also known as Wilms' tumor

Clinical context

A 5-year-old child presents with abdominal distension and a large abdominal mass palpable on examination. The child has no family history of cancer, and imaging reveals a large renal mass. The tumor is composed of immature renal blastemal cells with areas of rhabdomyoblasts and stromal elements. This presentation is classic for nephroblastoma, the most common malignant renal tumor in children.
