nephrotoxicity
Definition
The quality or state of being toxic to the kidneys
Clinical context
A 65-year-old male with metastatic lung cancer presents to the emergency department with decreased urine output and elevated creatinine levels. He recently started treatment with cisplatin chemotherapy and now complains of abdominal pain and progressive oliguria. Laboratory studies reveal elevated blood urea nitrogen and creatinine with normal urinalysis. The oncologist suspects nephrotoxicity as a side effect of his chemotherapeutic agent.
