A disease or pathological condition affecting the nerves
Clinical context
A 58-year-old diabetic patient presents with numbness and tingling in both feet that has progressively worsened over several months. On examination, there is decreased sensation to light touch and vibration in a stocking distribution. Deep tendon reflexes are diminished. These findings are consistent with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of long-standing diabetes mellitus.
