A condition characterized by painful swallowing
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents to the emergency department with a 3-day history of severe throat pain that worsens with swallowing. She denies fever but reports that even sipping water causes excruciating pain. On examination, her throat appears erythematous with bilateral tonsillar swelling.
