Definition

A condition characterized by an insufficient amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus

Clinical context

A 32-year-old pregnant woman presents at 34 weeks gestation with decreased fetal movement. Ultrasound reveals significantly reduced amniotic fluid volume around the fetus, with fluid levels below the 10th percentile for gestational age. The patient reports a history of polyuria and is found to have gestational diabetes mellitus.
