oliguria
Definition
A medical condition characterized by the production of abnormally small amounts of urine
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man presents to the emergency department with decreased urine output over the past 24 hours. His blood pressure is 85/50 mmHg, and his serum creatinine has risen from 1.2 to 2.8 mg/dL. He has a history of heart failure and is currently taking furosemide. The patient's oliguria is likely due to prerenal acute kidney injury secondary to volume depletion from his diuretic use.
Mnemonic
Oliguria = 'O' for old age, 'L' for low blood pressure, 'I' for inadequate fluid intake, 'G' for glomerular disease, 'U' for urinary obstruction, 'R' for renal failure
