Definition

A condition characterized by abnormal bone development or function due to nutritional or metabolic disorders

Clinical context

A 65-year-old patient with chronic kidney disease presents with bone pain and fractures. Laboratory studies reveal elevated phosphate levels and decreased calcium levels. X-rays show evidence of bone deformities and pathological fractures. This patient has secondary hyperparathyroidism leading to renal osteodystrophy. The metabolic disturbance affects bone mineralization and leads to bone fragility.
