paraganglioma
Definition
A neoplasm arising from paraganglia, which are collections of neuroendocrine cells located outside the adrenal medulla
Clinical context
A 45-year-old woman presents with headaches, palpitations, and sweating that occur intermittently throughout the day. She has a history of hypertension that has been difficult to control with medications. Physical examination reveals no significant findings. Imaging studies show a mass in the neck region. Laboratory tests demonstrate elevated levels of metanephrines in the urine. The mass is found to be a paraganglioma, a neuroendocrine tumor arising from paraganglia outside the adrenal medulla.
