parakeratosis
Definition
A dermatological condition characterized by the presence of abnormal keratinization, typically involving the retention of nuclei in the stratum corneum
Clinical context
A 45-year-old patient presents with scaly, hyperkeratotic lesions on the palms and soles. Microscopic examination of a skin biopsy reveals retained nuclear material in the stratum corneum, consistent with parakeratosis. This finding is characteristic of psoriasis and other hyperproliferative skin conditions.
Mnemonic
PARAkeratosis = PRAEKLIN (Prae-keratinization) - retention of nuclei in the stratum corneum
