Inflammation of the skin around the nail
Clinical context
A 28-year-old manicurist presents with painful swelling and redness around her fingernails that has been worsening over 3 days. She reports significant tenderness when touching the affected area and notes that the skin appears infected. On examination, there is obvious erythema and edema surrounding the nail folds bilaterally.
