Definition

inflammation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart

Clinical context

A 28-year-old male presents with sharp, pleuritic chest pain that worsens when lying down and improves when sitting forward. On examination, a friction rub is audible on cardiac examination. ECG shows diffuse ST-segment elevations. These findings are classic for acute pericarditis, often seen in viral infections or following myocardial infarction.
