inflammation of the periosteum, the fibrous membrane covering the surface of bones
Clinical context
A 16-year-old male presents with localized pain and swelling over his tibia after running training. Physical examination reveals tenderness to palpation of the affected area with no signs of fracture on X-ray. The patient has a history of intense athletic training without adequate rest periods.
