peritoneal dialysis
Definition
A dialysis procedure that uses the peritoneal membrane as a filter to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man with end-stage renal disease presents to the emergency department with shortness of breath and bilateral lower extremity swelling. His creatinine is 5.2 mg/dL and BUN is 45 mg/dL. He is started on peritoneal dialysis due to his unstable cardiovascular status and inability to tolerate hemodialysis access. The procedure is performed using a catheter placed in the peritoneal cavity to introduce dialysate solution.
