pharyngitis
Definition
inflammation of the pharynx (throat)
Clinical context
A 12-year-old child presents with sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever for the past 3 days. On examination, the pharynx appears red and swollen with white exudate on the tonsils. The child's lymph nodes are enlarged and tender. A rapid strep test is positive, confirming the diagnosis of pharyngitis caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria.
