Definition
inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that supports the arch of the foot
Clinical context
A 65-year-old woman presents to the clinic complaining of severe heel pain that is worst with the first steps in the morning. She describes the pain as a sharp, stabbing sensation that improves after walking around for a few minutes. On examination, there is point tenderness along the medial aspect of the calcaneus and the pain is reproduced with passive dorsiflexion of the foot.
