Definition
Inflammation of the lung and pleura (lining of the chest cavity)
Clinical context
A 23-year-old man presents to the emergency department with sudden onset of sharp chest pain that worsens with breathing and coughing. He has been experiencing fever and productive cough for the past three days. On examination, he has decreased breath sounds and dullness to percussion over the right lower lobe. Chest X-ray shows consolidation with pleural effusion. The patient is diagnosed with pleuropneumonia.
