polyhydramnios
Definition
An excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid around the fetus during pregnancy
Clinical context
A 32-year-old pregnant woman at 34 weeks gestation presents with sudden onset dyspnea and abdominal distension. On examination, her fundal height is greater than expected for gestational age, and fetal heart tones are difficult to auscultate. Ultrasound reveals excessive amniotic fluid volume around the fetus. The patient is at increased risk for preterm labor and placental abruption.
