Definition

A pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, usually the liver and kidneys, occurring after the 20th week of pregnancy

Clinical context

A 28-year-old pregnant woman at 32 weeks gestation presents to the emergency department with headache, blurred vision, and epigastric pain. Her blood pressure is 160/110 mmHg, and urinalysis shows proteinuria 3+. Physical examination reveals bilateral lower extremity edema. The patient is diagnosed with preeclampsia and requires immediate management to prevent progression to eclampsia.
