Surgical removal of the prostate gland

Clinical context

A 68-year-old male presents with progressive urinary retention and recurrent urinary tract infections. His PSA levels are elevated at 12 ng/mL. Transrectal ultrasound reveals a large, irregular prostate gland. The patient undergoes radical prostatectomy for suspected prostate cancer. Postoperatively, he experiences urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. His PSA levels normalize within 6 months postoperatively.
