prostatic hyperplasia
Definition
abnormal enlargement of the prostate gland due to excessive cellular growth
Clinical context
A 65-year-old male presents with difficulty initiating urination, weak urine stream, and nocturia. On digital rectal exam, his prostate is palpable and measures 4 cm in diameter. A urine flow study shows decreased peak urinary flow rate. These findings are consistent with prostatic hyperplasia, a common condition in aging males.
