Definition

Elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, which carry blood from the heart to the lungs

Clinical context

A 32-year-old woman presents with progressive dyspnea and fatigue over several months. On examination, she has elevated jugular venous pressure, hepatomegaly, and a loud P2 heart sound. Echocardiography reveals severely elevated pulmonary artery pressures of 45/20 mmHg with normal left atrial pressures.
