Definition
An abnormal condition characterized by the presence of pus within a joint
Clinical context
A 35-year-old IV drug user presents with severe knee pain, swelling, and fever. Physical examination reveals warm, erythematous knee with limited range of motion. Joint aspiration shows purulent fluid with gram-positive cocci on Gram stain. The patient is diagnosed with pyarthrosis secondary to septic arthritis. Prompt drainage and antibiotic therapy are initiated to prevent joint destruction and systemic complications.
