Definition
A medical condition characterized by damage or disease of nerve roots, often causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the area supplied by the affected nerves
Clinical context
A 45-year-old construction worker presents with severe low back pain that radiates down his left leg to his foot. He describes the pain as sharp and shooting, especially when sitting or coughing. Physical examination reveals decreased sensation along the lateral aspect of his left leg and foot, with a positive straight leg raise test. MRI shows a herniated lumbar disc compressing the L5 nerve root.
