renal osteodystrophy
Definition
A bone disease associated with chronic kidney disease characterized by abnormal bone metabolism and mineralization
Clinical context
A 65-year-old patient with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis presents with bone pain and fractures. X-rays show bone thinning and abnormal mineralization patterns. Laboratory studies reveal elevated PTH levels and abnormal calcium-phosphate products. This patient's bone disease is secondary to his chronic kidney disease and represents classic renal osteodystrophy.
