renovascular hypertension
Definition
High blood pressure caused by narrowing of the renal arteries
Clinical context
A 60-year-old man presents with sudden onset severe hypertension and worsening kidney function. Physical examination reveals a bruit over the upper abdomen. Renal artery angiography shows significant stenosis of the left renal artery. This patient's hypertension is due to renovascular disease causing activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.
