reticulocytosis
Definition
An abnormal condition characterized by the presence of reticulated (network-like) red blood cells in the bloodstream
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents with fatigue and pallor. Her complete blood count shows a hemoglobin of 8.5 g/dL with reticulocyte count of 6%. Peripheral blood smear reveals numerous reticulated red blood cells. She has a history of hemolytic anemia. The elevated reticulocytes indicate increased erythropoietic activity in response to hemolysis.
Mnemonic
RETI - Reticulocytes are RETCHING in response to hemolysis
