Definition

A rare condition characterized by the formation of fibrous tissue in the retroperitoneal space, which is the area behind the peritoneum (the membrane lining the abdominal cavity)

Clinical context

A 50-year-old man presents with gradually worsening back pain and progressive oliguria over several weeks. Imaging reveals a mass in the retroperitoneal space compressing the ureters. The patient has no history of trauma or infection. On examination, there is tenderness in the flank area and decreased sensation in the distribution of the genitofemoral nerve.
