The breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue resulting in the release of muscle fibers and their contents into the bloodstream
Clinical context
A 25-year-old construction worker presents to the emergency department after collapsing at work following a 12-hour shift. He complains of severe muscle pain and weakness in his legs, and his urine is dark red in color. His medical history is significant for alcohol abuse and recent trauma to his thighs. Laboratory studies reveal elevated creatine kinase levels and myoglobinuria. The patient is diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis.
