sarcoidosis
Definition
An abnormal condition characterized by the formation of granulomas (small nodules) in various organs, particularly the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, and eyes. The name derives from the granulomatous lesions that resemble flesh.
Clinical context
A 35-year-old woman presents with bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on chest X-ray and elevated angiotensin-converting enzyme levels. She reports fatigue and dry cough for the past month. Physical examination reveals bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy and erythematous nodules on her lower legs. Her pulmonary function tests show restrictive lung disease with decreased diffusion capacity.
