schwannoma
Definition
A benign tumor derived from Schwann cells that surround nerve fibers
Clinical context
A 35-year-old woman presents with a slowly growing mass on her neck that has been present for several months. Physical examination reveals a firm, mobile, painless mass that moves with swallowing. Imaging studies show a well-circumscribed lesion adjacent to a nerve bundle. The tumor is surgically resected and histopathological examination confirms the diagnosis of schwannoma.
