syndactyly
Definition
A congenital condition where two or more fingers or toes are fused or joined together
Clinical context
A newborn presents with webbed fingers extending from the proximal phalanges, with the index and middle fingers completely fused. The parents report no family history of similar conditions. Physical examination reveals normal nail development on the fused digits, and the child has no other congenital anomalies. The condition is diagnosed as syndactyly and will require surgical separation for optimal function.
Mnemonic
Syndactyly = 'Syn' (together) + 'dactyly' (fingers), remember 'webbed fingers' as a key clinical clue
