synovitis
Definition
Inflammation of the synovial membrane that lines the joints
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents with painful swelling of her right knee that has worsened over the past week. She reports stiffness in the joint, especially in the morning, and difficulty bearing weight. On examination, the joint is warm, tender, and effused. Arthrocentesis reveals inflammatory synovial fluid. The patient has no history of trauma or infection. What is the most likely diagnosis? The synovial membrane lining the joint is inflamed, leading to increased production of synovial fluid and joint pain.
