teratoma
Definition
A tumor containing tissues of different types, resembling a malformed or abnormal fetus
Clinical context
A 28-year-old woman presents with a large abdominal mass and signs of early puberty. Imaging reveals a cystic mass with areas of calcification and soft tissue density. Laboratory studies show elevated alpha-fetoprotein levels. The mass is surgically resected and histopathology reveals a tumor containing hair, teeth, and bone tissue.
