Definition

A medical emergency where the testis twists within the scrotum, cutting off its blood supply

Clinical context

A 19-year-old male presents to the emergency department with sudden onset severe scrotal pain and nausea. On examination, the affected testis is swollen, erythematous, and positioned higher than normal with a 'bell-clapper' deformity. The cremasteric reflex is absent on the affected side. Immediate surgical exploration is required to prevent testicular necrosis.
