Clinical context
A 45-year-old woman presents to the emergency department with pain and swelling in her left leg that started after she began taking oral contraceptives. Physical examination reveals a warm, tender, red streak along the superficial veins of her leg. Doppler ultrasound confirms thrombophlebitis with associated venous thrombosis.
