thrombosis
Definition
The formation or presence of a blood clot in the circulatory system
Clinical context
A 65-year-old male presents to the emergency department with sudden onset chest pain and shortness of breath. He has a history of atrial fibrillation and was recently hospitalized for pneumonia. On examination, he has bilateral crackles in his lungs and elevated jugular venous pressure. A CT angiogram reveals pulmonary embolism, which is a form of thrombosis where a clot obstructs the pulmonary circulation.
