thymic hyperplasia
Definition
An abnormal increase in the size or number of cells in the thymus gland
Clinical context
A 35-year-old woman presents with fatigue and shortness of breath. Laboratory studies reveal normocytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Imaging shows generalized lymphadenopathy and an enlarged mediastinal mass. Biopsy of the mass reveals hyperplastic thymic tissue with increased T-cell proliferation. This finding is commonly associated with autoimmune disorders and certain malignancies.
