inflammation of the thyroid gland
Clinical context
A 45-year-old woman presents with fatigue, weight gain, and neck pain. Physical examination reveals a tender, enlarged thyroid gland. Laboratory studies show elevated anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies and decreased T4 levels. The patient's symptoms are most consistent with autoimmune thyroiditis.
