transient ischemic attack
Definition
A temporary disruption of blood supply to part of the brain, causing stroke-like symptoms that resolve within 24 hours
Clinical context
A 67-year-old man presents to the emergency department with sudden onset of right arm weakness and slurred speech that began 45 minutes ago. His symptoms completely resolved by the time he arrives at the hospital. He has a history of atrial fibrillation and hypertension. CT scan of the brain shows no evidence of stroke. The most likely diagnosis is transient ischemic attack.
