ureterectomy
Definition
Surgical removal of the ureter
Clinical context
A 65-year-old man with a history of renal cell carcinoma presents with hematuria and flank pain. Imaging reveals a large mass in the right kidney with extension into the renal pelvis. The patient undergoes radical nephrectomy with simultaneous ureterectomy to remove the affected ureter. The specimen is sent for pathological examination to confirm complete tumor removal.
Mnemonic
Ureterectomy = Ureter + Ectomy (removal) - think 'cutting out the ureter' to remember it's surgical removal
