ureterocele
Definition
A congenital anomaly characterized by the dilatation of the terminal portion of the ureter, forming a sac-like structure
Clinical context
A 2-year-old girl presents with recurrent urinary tract infections and abdominal pain. Ultrasound reveals a large, fluid-filled sac in the bladder wall that appears to be connected to the ureter. Cystoscopy shows a characteristic 'saccular' bulge at the ureteral orifice. The condition is often associated with ureteral duplication and can cause urinary obstruction.
Mnemonic
URETEROcele = URETER + sac - remember it's a ureteral sac that causes urinary obstruction
